Electricity Load Shedding
Background:
With the current electricity shortage that Namibia and the entire Southern African Development Community (SADC) region are experiencing, Eskom (South African Power Utility) from whom NamPower (Namibian Power Utility) has been importing and still imports almost more than half of Namibia’s electricity, can no longer guarantee a continuous uninterrupted power supply to Namibia. As a result, Eskom has introduced what is called “load shedding” in times of major crisis (when demand is outstripping supply). This load shedding then becomes a chain reaction:- from Eskom to NamPower – from NamPower to electricity distributors such as OPE – from OPE to customers.
In order to be ready whenever NamPower is requested by Eskom to load shed and thereby also requesting OPE to load shed accordingly, OPE has prepared load shedding schedules for Oshakati town.
